Discovery Bible Study
A Discovery Bible Study (DBS) is a simple, reproducible approach to exploring the Bible that empowers people to discover truth for themselves, regardless of prior experience. In a DBS, participants read a short passage and reflect together on a few key questions — such as, “What does this tell us about God?” and “What will I do about it?”
By keeping the discussion focused only on what’s found in the passage, we allow the Bible to speak for itself. This is the heart of Discovery Bible Study: “Where do you see that in the text?” The goal isn’t to be taught by an expert, but to encounter Scripture personally, take practical steps of obedience, and invite others into the journey.
How DBS Works
Start with life & last week
Each group begins by talking about their week.
What are you thankful for?
What’s been stressing or bothering you?
Retell story from the previous meeting.
What did you do differently because of this story?
Who did you tell and what was their reaction?
Read and retell the story
One person reads the new Bible passage out loud, and the rest follow along.
Someone else retells the story and others fill in what is they think is missing.
Read the passage again.
Discuss what this passage says about God, Jesus or his plan.
Read the passage one last time.
Discuss what this passage says about us (humanity).
Make it personal and practical
Each person then answers these questions.
- According to this study, what am I doing well?
- What do I need to change?
- Who do I know that needs to hear this story, and how can I tell them?
- Who can I invite to study the Bible?
